It has become clear that the work that we do (academic support & reinforcement of the IEB & CAPS curriculums) has a major role to play in the pursuit of academic excellence. SHINE team is well prepared and our educators have been trained to rise to the new challenges in order to complement lessons at school. In addition to Saturday classes, online lessons are offered by our expert educators who have the expertise in e-teaching.
SHINE ACADEMIA
The SHINE ACADEMIA Programme is a professionally run educational intervention for Grade 11 & 12 learners, based at Groote Schuur High School, with the aim of becoming a renowned school of excellence in core academic areas such as Mathematics*(compulsory), Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, English Home Language & Afrikaans First Additional Language. We have small intimate classes (average 10 to 15 learners) to ensure an effective learning environment, following the IEB & CAPS curriculums and lessons are taught by proficient, experienced and committed educators who have produced excellent results over the past years. Our educators are past Principals, current Deputy Principals and Heads of Departments and they are recipients of accolades and awards. Academic support lessons can help learners go back over something they didn’t understand in class, help them with complicated homework, or prepare for exams, especially because our educators are adept at adjusting their pedagogy to each learner’s needs.
The Program
Getting into a prestigious university takes a unique set of academic results and life skills. It is enormously difficult for students to find their way into the university and harder still for them to thrive once they are there. It is with this in mind that SHINE ACADEMIA has launched the Mathematics and Science initiative. SHINE is a structured program and runs on most Saturdays throughout the year. We strongly urge learners to take three subjects. A learner can, however, take a minimum of two subjects of which Mathematics is compulsory. We provide workbooks, revise past exam papers and prepare learners well for final exams and our statistics prove that learners who attend SHINE Classes make incomparable academic progress.
Developing a learner holistically is our focus-Maintaining high academic standards, standardised tests, recruiting the best teachers, access to well-resourced laboratories to conduct Practicals/experiments, providing career guidance, life-skills workshops, Science Expo, preparing for NBT etc. provide learners various avenues to acquire skills and experiences to cope with the academic pressure (in preparation for tertiary studies). SHINE learners are mentored in Grade 11 & 12, and are encouraged to pursue degrees in Engineering, Health Sciences, Commerce and related fields.
Fees
The programme focuses on enhancing the learners’ academic results and prepare them to compete for places at Universities. We charge learners an economically competitive fee for the tuition i.e. R425 for 3 subjects (4.5 hours of teaching) and R395 for 2 subjects (3 hours of teaching) per Saturday. The fees are used to cover the costs of the programme as well as to cross subsidise the Saturday School programme which provides tuition for learners from under- serviced communities who do not have access to SHINE Programme due to a variety of socio-economic factors.
